The director of the Civil Aviation Authority is investigated for abuse of power and causing of damage of over 800,000 lei to the state, IPN reports.
The National Anticorruption Center said that on February 17, public servants of the Civil Aviation Authority converted 3 million lei from the institution’s account into euros, which then cost 28 lei per euro. The Law on Civil Aviation and the institution’s regulations, approved by Government decision, ban such kinds of transactions. As a result, considerable damage was caused to the institution following the depreciation of the euro.
On May 6, the prosecution body of the National Anticorruption Center carried out a search at the Civil Aviation Authority and determined that the damage caused to the state due to the difference in the exchange rate amounted to over 800,000 lei.
The director is investigated as a suspect and is to be charged. He faces 6 to 10 years in jail and a ban on holding particular posts or performing particular activities for a period of 10 to 15 years.
