Students from 17 universities of Moldova who won Merit Scholarships this year were awarded in a ceremony at the Palace of the Republic on Wednesday evening, Info-Prim Neo reports. A number of 81 students received Merit Scholarships 2010. They were selected at a contest that involved 192 last-year students and applicants for a Master’s Degree. Twelve of the 81 scholarships are first-degree scholarships (to the value of 12,000 lei), 26 are second-degree scholarships (8,000 lei), while the rest are third-degree scholarships (5,000 lei). Besides diplomas, the scholars received as gifts by a bankcard and books, as well as by a laptop from the Government. Elena Dragutan, an applicant for a Master’s Degree in public communication at the State University of Moldova, said she will spend the money on Christmas presents for the dear persons and will make investments in scientific research. Eugen Oleneac, general medicine student at the University of Medicine and Pharmaceutics “Nicolae Testemitanu”, stressed that this scholarship is of great importance to him. He said he will invest the money in books and in other contests in which he intends to compete next year. Nadejda Trofim, an applicant for a Master’s Degree in sociology at the State University, plans to study abroad with the won money. The eleventh Merit Scholarships contest was organized by the Educational Advising Center under the aegis of the Rectors Council of Moldova, with financial support from B.C. Moldova Agroindbank SA and Orange Moldova. Angela Muset, the head of the Educational Advising Center, expressed her conviction that the scholars will become professionals in their fields and will later invest in other young people.
