Some of the politicians from the opposition consider that the Transnistrian conflict settlement talks in the 5+2 format will lead to the resolution of the dispute, while others think only discussions will be held. The issue was developed in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

Tatiana Potang, deputy head of the Liberal Reformist Party, considers the talks in the 5+2 format will not lead to the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. “I’m not optimistic about the chances of reunifying the country as a result of these talks. The negotiations are held rather for keeping the situation under control,” she said.

A similar opinion was stated by Sergiu Coropceanu, the secretary general of the Social Democratic Party. “I welcome the resumption of the talks, but don’t think that they will lead to the country’s reunification. Such negotiations have been held for over 20 years and all in vain. Those from the left side of the Nistru should also want the conflict to be settled. The Moldovan authorities also didn’t show firm determination to resolve the Transnistrian dispute,” he noted.

The leader of the People’s Movement “Antimafie” Sergiu Mocanu expressed a differing opinion. “The resumption of the negotiations was necessary, especially in the current geopolitical conditions. If the problems related to the government of Moldova and the theft of the billion hadn’t existed, I think the Transnistrian dispute would have been resolved because favorable conditions appeared. These talks are welcome and necessary for the country’s reunification,” he said.

The Transnistrian conflict settlement talks in the 5+2 format were resumed in Berlin on June 2, after a hiatus of two years. The 5+2 format includes representatives of Chisinau and Tiraspol, Russia, Ukraine and OSCE as mediators and of the U.S. and the EU as observers.

The last round of talks was held in Vienna in June 2014.
