Experts have contrasting opinions about the chances of the two candidates for the mayoralty of Chisinau - Dorin Chirtoaca, of the Liberal Party, and Zinaida Grecheanyi, of the Party of Socialists – who will compete in the second round of voting on June 28. The opinions were stated in the talk show “Politics” on TV 7 channel, IPN reports.
Anatol Taranu, director of the Center for Strategic Analysis and Political Consultancy “Politicon”, considers the chances of the candidates depend on the turnout of the Chisinau residents at the elections. “If the voter turnout in Chisinau is higher than 50%, the Liberal candidate has chances to win. If about 40% of the voters cast their ballots, Grecheanyi will win. The people who vote for the right are disappointed. These voters have waited for an optimistic signal and this signal is the formation of a pro-European parliamentary coalition and of the Government. But there was no such a signal. Chirtoaca is thus in a disadvantageous situation,” he stated.
Political analyst Nicolae Chirtoaca considers the outcome of the elections does not depend on the candidates or the voters. “The post of mayor of Chisinau is negotiated. The two are just pawns in the great games played behind the scenes,” he said.
Jurist Ion Dron believes it is the voters who will lose in the race for the mayoralty of Chisinau. “The two candidates want to win the mayoralty in order to be able to steal and to enrich themselves, not to solve the problems of the residents of Chisinau,” he said.
