With 99% of the vote reports counted, the “Yes” voting option in the constitutional referendum stands at 50.29%. Respectively, 49.71% of the participants in the referendum voted "No". Thus, the difference between the two options is of about 8,600 votes, IPN reports.
According to preliminary data presented by the Central Election Commission, 22 vote reports are yet to be counted. The last to vote were the Moldovan citizens in the United States and Canada. There, polling stations closed at 07:00 a.m. Moldova time.
CEC chairwoman Angelica Caraman told reporters in a briefing that for the national constitutional referendum to be declared valid, at least 1/3 of the people put on electoral lists must have voted in it. The law will be considered adopted if the majority of the citizens who participated in the plebiscite voted “Yes”.
"The Commission will submit to the Constitutional Court a report on the results of the referendum, which, for its part, within 10 days will confirm or reject, through a decision, the results of the plebiscite," said the CEC chief.
In the referendum, the citizens answered the question “Are you for amending the Constitution so as to enshrine the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union in it?". Over 1.562 million voters went to the polls, ensuring a turnout of 51.68%.
