The associations of the Diaspora Coordination Council staged the first annual conference outside Moldova’s borders in Florence, Italy, on October 18-20. The event involved representatives of the Moldovan Diaspora and of the Moldovan Government.
Contacted by IPN, spokeswoman for the Diaspora Coordination Council and head of the Moldovan community in Quebec, Canada, Ala Mandacanu said the event was organized with the own resources of the Council and the Bureau for Diaspora Relations. The members of the Moldovan communities abroad expressed their support for the European integration policies pursued by the Moldovan authorities before the Vilnius Summit. They also support the implementation of reforms and the initialing of the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU.
The participants in the conference unanimously adopted a resolution that was signed by over 50 associations from 16 countries of the world. Through the agency of the resolutions, the Diaspora associations asked for a new mechanism for improving the Coordination Council and the system for communication and cooperation with the Moldovan administration. They also suggested naming highly qualified representatives of the Diaspora to political and public posts.
The participants asked working out and implementing projects to promote Moldova’s image abroad and to improve the legislation on the electoral system so as to ensure the right to vote of the Moldovans from outside the country and enable the Diaspora to massively take part in the 2014 parliamentary elections.
