The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) elected Diana Scobioală as judge to the European Court of Human Rights in respect of the Republic of Moldova. She obtained an absolute majority of votes cast and will hold a term of office of nine years, IPN reports.
The term will commence on December 3, 2021. Currently, Diana Scobioală manages the National Institute of Justice.
Judges are elected by PACE from a list of three candidates nominated by each State which has ratified the European Convention on Human Rights.
The Government of the Republic of Moldova approved three candidates for judge to the European Court of Human Rights. These were Diana Scobioală, Vladimir Grosu and Nicolae Eșanu.
The procedure for electing the new judge at the ECHR on behalf of the Republic of Moldova was initiated after the PACE Secretary General Wojciech Sawicki on May 26, 2020 sent a letter informing that the term in office of Moldova’s current judge at the Court Valeriu Gritsco expires on December 2, 2021 and a new judge should be chosen.
