The president of honor of the Democratic Party Dumitru Diacov admits that his party is now in a delicate situation owing to the controversial referendums set to take place in the Territorial Autonomous Unit of Gagauzia on February 2. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, he said that the events in this region are generated also by geopolitical players’ behavior towards Moldova, IPN reports.

“I believe that we have to discuss more elements, including the messages delivered by Basescu from Bucharest. It is a kind of reaction to these statements too. I’m concerned about the initiatives in Gagauzia and about Basescu’s intention to bring us happiness by the union of Romania and Moldova. We have friends in different parts, who try to test our mind,” he stated.

Dumitru Diacov considers that what will happen in Moldova depends on Moldova and on the political developments in Moldova. “We must be more responsible towards what is going on in our country. There will always be elements that will exploit different geopolitical themes in Moscow and in Bucharest. We should be clam and cooperate both with Romania and Russia so as to have serious partnerships. We must have more unity in Chisinau as we will then look with calm and, possibly, with a little irony at such unusual initiatives that cause us problems,” said Dumitru Diacov

The referendums on Moldova’s foreign policy course and on Gagauzia’s right to self-determination are backed by the supporters of the Democratic Party that hold a majority in the local Gagauz legislature. But they run counter to the policy promoted by the central administration of the party.
