Developments in Ukraine pose threats to Moldova, Iurie Leanca

Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said the developments in Ukraine are dangerous and pose direct and indirect, political and economic threats to Moldova, IPN reports.

According to the official, the situation in Ukraine makes us to be more responsible given the period through which Moldova goes. Iurie Leanca called on all the political forces and civil society to show maximum responsibility. “The speculative approaches must be left aside. We should unite around the idea of transforming Moldova into a functional, powerful and democratic state where the people’s needs are the most important,” he said in a news conference on Monday.

The Premier stated that as far as he knows, the European Union and Ukraine intend to sign the political part of the Association Agreement as soon as possible, while the agreement on the creation of the Free Trade Area after the May 25 presidential elections. Moldova may sign the Association Agreement with the EU when Ukraine signs this second agreement.

The situation in Ukraine remains tense. The Russian troops continue to keep a part of the Crimean Peninsula under control. The ousted President Victor Yanukovych, who still considers himself head of state, is to give a news conference in Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia on March 11.
