The 48-year-old Moldovan woman diagnosed with the novel coronavirus upon her return from Italy is in intensive care at the National Clinical Hospital. The patient is isolated in a box and only two nurses and a doctor who are equipped appropriately have access to her. The woman’s state of health improved slightly. The information was presented in a news conference in the morning of March 9, IPN reports.

Initially, the woman was admitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital “Toma Ciorbă” and was then transferred to the National Clinical Hospital. The hospital’s director Anatol Ciubotaru said the woman’s biochemical parameters have improved. “The concentration of oxygen in the arteries is reduced and this points to a banal pneumonia. It is nothing unordinary.  We are optimistic and hope that the patient will recover. The woman has very serious chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus and overweight that negatively influenced the process. But the dynamics are under control,” stated the director.

Minister of Health, Labor and Social Protection Viorica Dumbrăveanu said that over 10,000 epidemiological forms completed when entering the country were passed on to family doctors, who are now supervising more than 5,000 persons. The suspected cases of March 8 tested negative. There are three more suspected persons and the test results will be ready in the course of today.

The minister also said that “Toma Ciorba” Hospital is one of the strategic medical institutions where the infected persons are to be admitted. If the state of health is serious, the patients will be taken to the National Clinical Hospital. The children with light and medium forms will be admitted to the Municipal Clinical Hospital of Contagious Diseases. The Mother and Child Institute is another strategic institution. If there are more cases, the Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Maternity Hospital No. 2 will also accept patients and will isolate them.

This is the first case of the novel coronavirus confirmed in Moldova. In connection with this, the authorities issued a national orange alert.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, 105,828 cases of the novel coronavirus were recorded worldwide between December 31, 2019 and March 8, 2020. The death toll rose to 3,584.
