Three main hypotheses are examined in the case of the fire that damaged a building at the Central Market of Chisinau on the night of May 25. The Central Market’s head Veaceslav Balan, in the meeting of the Chisinau Municipal Council, said among the examined versions are a short circuit, violation of the anti-fire rules when using and installing electrical equipment and bringing of a source of fire from outside. The owners of the building assessed the damage done by the fire at about half a million lei, IPN reports.
According to Veaceslav Balan, the fire started at a private store. The intervention group of the Central Market used water from two hydrants and stopped the extension of the fire before the firefighters arrived. “The roof and the second floor were damaged, while the things from the first floor were saved. The person on duty saw the fire began at one of the entrances of the building. This building was privatized last year. The owners appropriated 6 meters of the area in front of the building, without the consent of the administration of the Central Market, and probably planned to extend it,” he stated.
The fire destroyed 1,200 square meters of the roof and things from the second floor. Veaceslav Balan said there are 69 private companies working at the Central Market and these should assume responsibility for the areas they possess.
