Minister of the Interior Alexandru Jizdan and deputy head of the General Police Inspectorate Gheorghe Cavcaliuc presented details about a number of loud cases concerning public figures of Moldova. The minister said they have a suspect in the case of the theft from the car of Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca. This made depositions and the case is considered solved, IPN reports.

After a meeting of the Inspectorate’s Administration Board, the journalists asked the minister about the grenade explosion in the courtyard of National Bank governor Dorin Dragutanu. Alexandru Jizdan said there are suspects in this case, but refused to say how many and who are these. He noted that they also have suspects in the case of the watch shop burglary.

For his part, Gheorghe Cavcaliuc said three persons took part in the theft from the Chisinau mayor’s car, but this wasn’t a planned robbery. The mayor’s vehicle was parked in a poorly lit area and this attracted the thieves.

In the Board’s meeting of March 11, Gheorghe Cavcaliuc presented a report on the work done by the national police last year. He said that more than 1,100 police officers left the General Police Inspectorate in 2015. About 60% of these left the system because of the low salaries.

As regards road safety, Cavcaliuc said the number of traffic accidents and of persons hurt in these has decreased over the last five years. The crime rate fell by 5.5%.

According to the report, except for the municipalities of Chisinau and Balti, high crime rates were recorded in the districts of Cantemir, Causeni, Ialoveni and Rezina. The safest districts are Falesti, Nisporeni, Sangerei, Dubasari, and Telenesti.

This year the General Police Inspectorate aims to increase the authority of the national police and its prestige among the people.
