The United States supports the real reformers of the justice system, those who are ready to put aside small differences and take up the task. The statement belongs to the US Ambassador to Chisinau, Dereck J. Hogan and was made on September 16 at the meeting with Law Department students from the State University of Moldova, IPN reports.
In his speech on the justice reform given in front of the students, the US ambassador said that, following the political changes that occurred in June, the leaders put aside their disagreements and differences to devise a new path. "This included a public commitment to fight corruption, to eliminate political interests in the justice system and to build truly independent and democratic institutions," said the US ambassador.
Dereck J. Hogan is convinced that Prime Minister Maia Sandu' s reform agenda can fight corruption and boost economic growth. "This cannot happen overnight or in the absence of broad political, public and international support. The international community is ready to contribute to ensuring the success of these initiatives. The US is increasing its assistance for the judiciary in the Republic of Moldova”, said the American diplomat, who also stated that the expectations from the ruling coalition are very high.
"The parties that form the coalition are still learning to cooperate. Even the leaders of the coalition have recognized several mistakes, including those related to the process of appointing members to the Constitutional Court,” said Dereck J. Hogan. The ambassador mentioned that, for a start, the Republic of Moldova needs a truly independent prosecutor general. "The draft law proposed by the Government on the selection of the prosecutor general aims at limiting the political influence on the process of selecting the person who will be prosecutor general," said the diplomat.
According to Dereck J. Hogan, the reform of other institutions, such as the Superior Council of Magistracy, the Supreme Court of Justice and the Superior Council of Prosecutors, are supported by the United States.
"You deserve a judicial system that serves and protects you. It won't be easy, but I promise that the final goal is worth the effort,” said Dereck J. Hogan.
