Deputy Premier in Brussels: Moldova is more resilient to security challenges with EU support

The Republic of Moldova is now more resilient to security challenges thanks to the support of the European Union, said Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who had in Brussels a meeting with Josep Borell, EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, IPN reports.

“We appreciate the activity of the European Union Partnership Mission in our country, especially as regards the strengthening of the institutional capacities for combating hybrid threats and also the assistance for the defense sector through the European Peace Facility,” stated Mihai Popșoi.

The officials also discussed the priorities for the next period and the new opportunities for cooperation in the security and defense sector. They also conferred on the situation in the Transnistrian region, in the context of the latest provocations, and the fight against Russian propaganda.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Josep Borrell assured of all the European Union’s support in the foreign affairs and security sectors, including on Moldova’s European path.

Deputy Prime Minister Popșoi also had a meeting with Stefano Sannino, Secretary-General of the European External Action Service. The official spoke about the security cooperation between Moldova and the EU, thus mentioning the EU Partnership Mission in Moldova and the aligning of Moldova with the foreign policy of the European Union.

Another meeting was with Olivér Várhelyi, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement. Theere were underlined the progress made by Moldova in the process of joining the European Union, the reforms done by Moldova and the security situation in the region. The officials also discussed the holding of the first intergovernmental conference, which will mark the official opening of Moldovas EU accession negotiations.

“I thanked the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood for the constant support provided by the European Union for our country. We still have a lot of work to do, but we will make every effort to fulfill all the recommendations and be part of the big family of the European Union as soon as possible,” said Mihai Popșoi.

On Wednesday, March 20, Deputy Prime Minister Popșoi will have a meeting with NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana. On March 22, the Moldovan official will pay a working visit to Budapest.
