Deputy PM Popescu signs bilateral documents in Cairo

Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, signed a number of bilateral documents in Cairo. Among these are the memorandum of understanding on the institution of a mechanism of public consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the intergovernmental agreement on visa waiver for holders of diplomatic, service and special passports, IPN reports.

Another document signed in Cairo is the memorandum of understanding between the Diplomatic Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and the Institute for Diplomatic Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

In the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt Sameh Shoukry, Minister Popescu analyzed the stage and prospects of bilateral cooperation in areas with a real development potential, agreeing on this occasion to facilitate the dialogue at governmental and business levels.

A separate topic of interest was the launch of discussions on the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries, which will substantially contribute to strengthening the commercial and economic relations between Moldova and Egypt.

As regards commercial cooperation, the sides agreed to take the existing economic opportunities, especially in the fields of agriculture, pharmacy, energy, tourism and infrastructure. “The organization of an Egypt – Moldova economic forum in which I took part together with Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vladimir Bolea, secretary of state at the Ministry of Economy Vadim Gumene and director general of the National Food Safety Agency Radu Musteața was a concrete step in this regard,” stated Nicu Popescu.

There were discussed the most recent security developments following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the triggered global food crisis. The official reiterated that the Republic of Moldova condemns Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

“The visit to Cairo was made in connection with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral Moldovan-Egyptian relations and is the first visit paid by a foreign affairs minister of the Republic of Moldova to the Arab Republic of Egypt,” said Nicu Popescu, being quoted in a press release.
