The use and sale of disposable dishware, except for the biodegradable objects, is likely to be banned as of January 1, 2021. The Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities on July 4 examined a bill to amend and supplement the legislation in this regard, IPN reports.
According to the authors of the bill, the non-recyclable plastic items are a source of garbage in communities. They emit toxic gasses when they are burned and can suffocate or interrupt the digestion of the animals who eat these. Plastic items can take 100 to 400 years to decompose. The use of tableware made from paper, corn flour, organic hemp, sugar beet and cane and other materials is proposed as an alternative.
The violation of these provisions could be penalized with a fine of 3,000 to 4,500 lei in the case of private individuals and of 6,000 to 12,000 lei or equal to the value of the identified batch, but not less than 12,000 lei in the case of legal entities. The bill is to be debated by Parliament.
By another bill adopted earlier, the use and sale of plastic bags is banned as of January 1, 2019.
