Department of Penitentiary Institutions reacts to accusations of Vlad Filat’s lawyers

The Department of Penitentiary Institutions provided details following press reports about the statements made by the lawyers for ex-Premier Vlad Filat. It said that based on the legal provisions concerning the detention conditions, the rights and obligations of detainees, the detention conditions and regime are strictly respected, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Department says that the detainees can have telephone conversations only on their initiative and at their request. Conversations at the request of relatives or other persons are not allowed. These can only discuss with the representatives of the administration and can communicate exceptional information to these for being transmitted to the detainee. The accused Vlad Filat asked to have a conversation with his relatives the next day after his transfer to Penitentiary No. 13, on October 24.

According to the Department, the Penitentiary’s administration. within 15 days of the transfer of the detainee, informs the court of law about this and the husband/wife or one of the relatives of the detainees or another person indicated by this about the detention place, postal address, requirements concerning meetings, the list of basic objects and food products that the detainees can have on them, can receive as parcels or can purchase at the prison’s shop.

Vlad Filat’s lawyers issued a communique, saying their client’s rights were violated when he was transferred from the remand unit of the National Anticorruption Center to Penitentiary No. 13 in Chisinau. According to these, Vlad Filat’s right to contact his wife and his lawyers to inform them about his detention place wasn’t respected.
