Denmark will allocate €200,000 to the Republic of Moldova for programs to support the freedom of the press and to counteract misinformation, Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeppe Kofod informed his Moldova counterpart Nicu Popescu during a telephone conversation, IPN reports.

The officials conferred on the bilateral agenda, strengthening of democracy and the European integration process of the Republic of Moldova. As to the extension of the dialogue with the EU, especially as regards the environment and the fight against the detrimental effects of climate change, Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu said there is potential for learning from the Danish experience in ensuring transition to a green economy and digital transformation. He noted that Moldova banks on the Danish know-how in the clean and efficient use of energy, sustainable transport and research and innovation.

“I greeted my Danish counterpart’s announcement concerning the allocation, through the New Democracy Fund, of a sum of €200,000 for programs to support the freedom of the press in the Republic of Moldova and to counteract disinformation. We share Denmark’s conviction that the free and independent media are a cornerstone of any democracy,” stated Nicu Popescu, being quoted in a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.

The programs will focus on the development of capacities of the regional mass media, including from ATU Gagauzia, the Transnistrian region, Taraclia and Bălți municipality and will support activates that can contribute to enhancing professionalism and forming investigative journalists.
