Demographic situation in Moldova discussed by PM with UNFPA representatives

The demographic situation in the Republic of Moldova, as well as the developments in the process of joining the EU were discussed in the Government Building with representatives of the United Nations Population Fund. During the discussions, it was noted that Moldova is a leader in the region in terms of evidence-based demographic policies targeting people’s real needs, IPN reports.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean discussed with Florence Bauer, UNFPA Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The meeting was also attended by Karina Nersesyan, the new UNFPA Resident Representative in the Republic of Moldova, who took up her duties in Chisinau on March 1.

Premier Recean thanked for the support provided by UNFPA to Moldova in the most difficult periods, the prompt response to the refugee crisis and the involvement in building a more resilient and prosperous state. According to the official, the main directions of cooperation in the next period will aim at developing policies in the field of labor market, implementing programs for young people and the elderly, and also at ensuring efficient data governance.

For her part, Florence Bauer emphasized UNFPA’s readiness to continue providing the necessary support for reforms in education, healthcare and social protection. The official also congratulated the Republic of Moldova on the significant progress made in recent years, which brought the country closer to the European Union.

The sides also discussed the importance of modernizing the infrastructure for collecting and producing quality statistical data and referred to the conduct of the Population and Housing Census that starts on April 8, 2024.

UNFPA is the UN’s leading agency in population reproductive health, empowerment of youth and women, combating of violence and production of quality statistics for development. The Agency operates under the Country Program for 2023-2027, signed with the Government of the Republic of Moldova.
