The Democratic Party (PDM) today held a rally in support of “the constitutional order” and in protest against the newly established “treasonous” alliance between President Igor Dodon’s Party of Socialists and the political bloc ACUM.  Supporters chanted “The country is not for sale!” and “Dodon the Traitor!”, calling for the president’s resignation.

PDM president Vlad Plahotniuc told the crowd the rally is held to convey a message of solidarity and “to protect the country from a grouping of irresponsible politicians who are trying to seize it by passing in Parliament illegal laws in order to forcefully grab all the state institutions”. According to the PDM leader, this amounted to a coup orchestrated by President Igor Dodon, whom he called on to resign immediately so that snap parliamentary elections be held concomitantly with a snap presidential vote.

Pavel Filip, PDM’s senior vice president, declared that “Moldova is living complicated times (...) when our values and our faith are under threat, but the Democrats will never allow high treason” He added: “Igor Dodon, Andrei Năstase, Maia Sandu and the Socialists are the traitors of this country (…) We are people of action, and they are people of empty talk”.

Andrian Candu, PDM vice president, quoted the Constitution: “No person, or a group of persons, or a party, or any organization may seize power for oneself or itself”. He went on: “If in three months since elections, the parties in Parliament are unable to compromise and form a parliamentary majority, then only the people of Moldova may decide who is worthy of governing”.

The rally adopted a resolution that accused “citizen Igor Dodon of high treason” and declared that “a coup has been attempted in the interest of a foreign nation”. The PDM supporters also welcomed the decision to hold snap legislative elections on September 6. Then they marched to the President’s residence to hand the resolution to Igor Dodon.

According to PDM, the rally in the National Assembly Square gathered over 30,000 people from across Moldova.
