“I am happy to live in Moldova. There is a degree of democracy here, relative to other former Soviet states”, stated Democrat MP Oleg Tulea at the public debate “Political culture of society vs. political culture of the political class: solutions for the chicken or egg dilemma”, organized by Info-Prim Neo.
The MP mentioned that he had participated in a convention of Socialist International’s Committee on the CIS, Caucasus, and the Black Sea, which also hosted participants from Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, as well as Middle Asian countries. “I had the opportunity to listen to different stories, some, perhaps, subjectively interpreted, told by political people from these regions, and, to be honest, I am very happy to live in Moldova, because our democracy is of an advanced degree, relative to other states from the former Soviet region”, said Oleg Tulea.
He stated that the Moldovan society manifests its state through protests and meetings, and the citizens feel powerful enough to make the political class act responsibly. “There is access to mass media, the citizen can vote and has the opportunity to make choices, and compared to what is going on in Belarus or Azerbaijan, our political elite under society’s real issues better”, said Oleg Tulea.
“We are the lucky ones, who managed to absorb a set of democratic values faster, a set of European values, such that we ended up wishing for more. It is natural for us to want to level with an advanced democracy, as we witness in western countries, and I am sure that it will happen”, Oleg Tulea mentioned.
Nevertheless, the MP reckons that Moldova faces certain issues, the society is displeased, has remarks, and this must be a lesson for the governing politicians. “This makes us think and propose solutions, because it may cost us at the next elections”, the PDM MP noted.
The public debate “Political culture of society vs. political culture of the political class: solutions for the chicken or egg dilemma” is the eighth of such events, part of the “Developing political culture in public debates” project, supported by the German Hanns Seidel Foundation.
