Delegation of UN torture subcommittee visits Chisinau

The latest initiatives of the Moldovan Government in combating torture and ill-treatment were presented on Monday by Justice Minister Oleg Efrim to a delegation of the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT), which is visiting Chisinau until October 4. In a MoJ press release it was said that the delegation members were interested in learning more about a bill which is being developed to reform the ombudsman institution and also about the methods of interaction between the National Torture Prevention and the state institutions. The delegation members also wanted to know how the relevant authorities are applying earlier recommendations by the Subcommittee. Oleg Efrim invited the delegation members to formulate suggestions and commentaries on the bills concerned with a view to improving them.
