The municipality’s decision to increase the public transport fares in the capital city was challenged in court, deputy mayor Ilie Ceban stated in the ordinary meeting of officials of municipals services. According to him, the municipal authorities will defend their decision so as to maintain the agreed mechanism, IPN reports.

“Last week, the CMC’s decision and the mayor general’s order by which the new public transport fares in the municipality of Chisinau were approved were disputed. The lawsuit was already filed. The procedure is different from the ordinary one. The Chisinau City Hall was to be notified and be offered a period of 30 days for providing a response to the notification. This time the court was asked directly to suspend the decision,” stated the deputy mayor.

Ilie Ceban noted that the City Hall will present its position and will struggle for the decision to be maintained. The public transport fares haven’t been adjusted since 2009 and the Urban Bus Company and the Chisinau Electric Transport Company have sustained losses in time. Together with the approval of the new methodology, there were introduced different types of season tickets and over 15,000 new season tickets have been already sold. A number of concessions for categories of passengers were instituted.

Recently, the Chisinau Municipal Council approved the methodology for calculating the public transport fares in the municipality and the City Hall later announced that a common fare of 6 lei per trip by bus and trolleybus in the capital city and the suburban settlements will be applied. Now a trip by trolleybus costs 2 lei, while a trip by bus costs 3 lei.
