The decision of the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) regarding the method of overcoming the constitutional crisis faced by Moldova following failed attempts to elect the head of state will be made known today, June 3, Acting President and the Head of Parliament Mihai Ghimpu said during a program broadcast by the public TV channel Moldova 1 on Wednesday evening, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Mihai Ghimpu made it clear that the decision will be made public in a joint news conference of the Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjшrn Jagland and the leaders of the AEI - Mihai Ghimpu, Vlad Filat, Marian Lupu, and Serafim Urecheanu – that will start at 12.45.
The Council of Europe Secretary General is paying an official visit to Moldova at the invitation of Mihai Ghimpu. He will have separate meetings with the members of the Alliance and representatives of the Communists Party.
On the eve, Mihai Ghimpu had a working meeting with the ambassadors of the EU member states and the U.S. in Chisinau. He informed them about the Alliance's position on the sociopolitical situation in Moldova. An official communique says the essence of the position was formulated as follows “political and economic stability is needed to implement the government program proposed by the AEI,” but does not give details.
In the televised program, Mihai Ghimpu said Thorbjшrn Jagland was invited to Moldova to see the difficult situation caused by the constitutional crisis. “On the one hand, the Venice Commission, which is a body of the Council of Europe, reached the conclusion that the Constitution of Moldova cannot be modified by referendum. On the other hand, the Constitutional Court of Moldova said the modification by referendum is possible. Thus, the decision that will be announced today will propose amending the fundamental law either in Parliament or by referendum.
