December 25, when Christmas is celebrated according to Julian calendar, was officially instituted as a nonworking day. A bill to this effect was passed by Parliament in the second reading on December 20, IPN reports.

The bill contains amendments to the Labor Code by which December 25 is moved to the list of nonworking days. The amendments take effect when they are published.

A day ago, the MPs adopted changes to the Parliament Decision on nonworking days and public holidays of 1990. Thus, there will be three nonworking days on Christmas – December 25, when Christmas is celebrated according to the old calendar, and January 7 and 8, when Christmas is observed according to the modern-day Gregorian calendar. The bill comes into force when it is adopted.

December 25 was officially instituted a nonworking day after merging two initiatives submitted by Liberal and Liberal-Democratic MPs. The Communists didn’t support the bills.
