The relations between Romania and the Republic of Moldova are special and are based on the common language, culture, history and traditions and on a strategic partnership that is aimed at supporting the European course of the Republic of Moldova, Romania’s Ambassador to Moldova Daniel Ioniță stated in the Business Conference “Republic of Moldova – Destination for Romanian Investments”, IPN reports, quoting a press release of the Embassy of Romania.

According to the diplomat, Moldova and Romania recently celebrated 11 years of the launch of the Partnership. This period was especially fruitful. In the period, the Republic of Moldova signed the Association Agreement with the EU and its component, the DCFTA. The Moldovans have traveled visa-free in the EU for several years already and Moldova’s foreign trade is over 65% oriented to the EU market.

“Therefore, it was normal for Romania to become by far the largest trading partner of the Republic of Moldova, strengthening this position year by year, including in times of a pandemic,” noted Daniel Ioniță.

He also said that besides being a final export destination for Moldovan producers, Romania is a perfect bridge head for expanding Moldovan businesses onto European markets. Trade between Romania and Moldova developed spectacularly during the past ten years, also due to the growing Romanian investments.

In five years, the commercial exchanges doubled from about US$1 billion in 2014 to US$1.95 billion in 2020, with a record of US$2.218 billion in the pre-pandemic year 2019.

According to Daniel Ioniță, the value of a special relationship also depends on the quality of the bilateral cooperation. “We will remain untired in promoting the European course of the Republic of Moldova, the European values and principles, the rule of law and free trade as we are sure, also based on our own experience, that only this way the citizens of the Republic of Moldova can enjoy stability and prosperity,” stated Daniel Ioniță.
