The dams of two reservoirs in Leova district broke due to the heavy rain of the recent days. One of them is located near Covurlui village, while the other one is situated in Romanovca village, where the runoff damaged two bridges. The local authorities are taking measures to remedy the situation, and a state of emergency was declared in the district.
Contacted by IPN for details, the head of Leova district Nicolae Popa said that until now, due to high temperatures and lack of rainfall, the lakes were practically dry. They filled up when the rain started, and the dams of two reservoirs yielded.
At the moment, they are taking measures to restore vehicle movement on the bridge in Romanovca. The second bridge is to be reconstructed.
As for the dam in Sărata Nouă, Nicolae Popa said that the danger there was done away with.
The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations said the authorities are making efforts to reinforce the protection dams on the Dniester River in the perimeter of Ștefan Vodă district, near Răscăieți, Olănești, Crocmaz and Tudora villages. Similar works are being executed on the Prut River in the perimeter of Cantemir district, near Țiganca and Stoianovca villages.
During the night, rescuers were called out to pump water out of 33 houses and yards affected by floods.
Almost 2,000 employees of the Ministry of the Interior, with 328 vehicles, have been involved in the works to alleviate the consequences of bad weather.
