An internal inquiry of the Customs Service established that an employee of the institution, who allowed clearing the equipment and building materials of a company without paying customs duties, caused damage of 33 million lei to the state, IPN reports.
In a press briefing, Adrian Morarescu, head of the Customs Service’s Tax Collection Division, said that in February 2008, a company asked the Customs Service to exempt it from paying customs duties on the import of equipment and building materials. The company’s request was granted.
In 2012, the Customs Service carried out an inspection and established that the decision wasn’t justified. The customs duty was calculated and the company was informed it must pay 33 million lei into the state budget. But the company challenged the decision in court.
Within the internal inquiry, the Service determined that the then head of the Customs Duty Regulation Division was responsible for the decision taken in 2008. Adrian Morarescu gave no other details so as not to affect the official investigation.
