The state of the dam of the Ghidighici lake does not pose an imminent threat. However, this does not meet the security requirements and the fact that the volume of discharged water cannot be measured is the most serious problem. These are the conclusions of the experts who discussed the state of the dam within the competent parliamentary commission, IPN reports.

The representatives of the Security and Intelligence Service informed the authorities about the risk of floods if the dam bursts. “The mechanism for discharging water and setting the water level is worn out and hasn’t been repaired for 30 years. Risks can appear in emergencies and in a spring after a winter with a lot of snow,” said the Service’s vice director Ruslan Munteanu.

“If the dam bursts, the water waves will be 4.9 meters in height and Vatra town, which is the first settlement that will be flooded, will be 27% affected in five minutes. The water will reach the municipality of Chisinau in 25 minutes,” said Colonel Alexandru Oprea, who is the deputy head of Civil Protection and Emergencies Service.

According to the director of Moldova’s Waters Agency Arcadie Calaras, there are no technical and natural factors that would pose threats to the dam, but the human factor can affect its functionality. There is now no project to rehabilitate the whole complex Ghidighici. There will be repaired only particular segments.

The works to reconstruct the bottom sluice gate started on December 10, a sum of 2.6 million lei being allocated from the National Ecological Fund for the purpose.
