Cuza Voda Street will not become Alexei Belski, as reported. The announcement was made during a press briefing on Tuesday by Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca. He said that streets should be repaired and not renamed, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I took some measures to be sure and Cuza Voda St remains Cuza Voda St, especially as Cuza Voda’s bust was installed recently at the intersection with Dacia Avenue”, said the Mayor.
According to Dorin Chirtoaca, the AIE councilors acted so that such a decision would have no legal effect and the PCRM or Socialist groups couldn’t try to change the name of the street in the future. Besides, there is already a Belski St in Chisinau since 2006, in Riscani district, says the Mayor.
He added that the Communists’ and Socialists’ initiative to rename the street in the absence of AIE councilors is a proof of the CMC’s politicization. “They should better vote decisions that would bring more money to the municipality and that would enable us to repair more streets. The absurdities related to the renaming of streets have nothing to do with the city’s priorities. The decision of AIE’s municipal councilors is a message to everyone to keep their hands off our national values and historical personalities”, said the General Mayor of Chisinau.
On the same day, the Socialists’ Party issued a press release claiming that during Monday’s meeting, September 17, the Socialist councilors managed to convince the PLDM and PL groups to vote for renaming Alexandru Ioan Cuza St into Alexei Belski St. All the present councilors voted for it and Chirtoaca himself attended the meeting. According to the Socialists, Chirtoaca is behaving like a hypocrite and making sterile political statements after personally encouraging the renaming of the street.
