In 105 years of the Union between Bessarabia and Romania, the Minister of Culture of Romania Lucian Romașcanu said that the union between the two states today would represent a response to the most pressing problems. According to the official, the Moldovan and Romanian political classes should make sure that such a process is ensured and accepted. For his part, Moldova’s Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan said the decision taken by the People’s Council in 1918 represented a historic act and the Union generation showed extraordinary courage that can be the subject of a film or a theater play, IPN reports.

The Romanian official noted that the year 1918 was marked by provocations and uncertainty generated by the war, while the representatives of the People’s Council in Chisinau realized the importance of the moment and profited from the conjuncture that favored the Union. “In a historic moment, these people decided exactly what was right to happen and now Moldova needs Romania. We stand by and help Moldova with what is necessary, with food, energy and support for the shipment of freight. Culturally speaking, we haven’t had any borders for a long period of time. It is an important moment when I think the Union can respond to the most important questions. Things should be considered, negotiated and it is the duty of the politicians to obtain what is necessary as an important thing as the Union between Moldova and Romania should be done and accepted by everyone,” Lucian Romașcanu stated in the program “Common Objective” on TVR Moldova channel.

The mayor of the municipality of Buzau Constantin Toma said the politicians of the two states missed a moment that was favorable to the Union, namely the separation of historical Bessarabia from the Soviet Union by declaring the independence of Moldova in 1991. “East Germany reunited with West Germany into the current Federal Republic of Germany. More states could have detached themselves from the Soviet Empire then. That opportunity was missed. Maybe in the future we will be together in the European Union or maybe the union will be done directly. We must believe in our Romanian identity as we are a strong nation,” stated the mayor of Buzau.

The Minister of Culture of Moldova noted that the cultural borders between the two states disappeared long ago. The lesson of the Union of 1918 should represent an example of courage for the current politicians too. “Artists, writers, people of culture regard these historic events of 1918 as an extraordinary source of inspiration. It is an additional reason for the people of art to write novels, theater plays, film scripts. It wasn’t easy then too. The Union of 1918 didn’t occur by itself, with ovations only. There were difficult situations and the tense relations and foreign factors then also influenced this process, but the then generation had courage, dignity and determination on the road that it chose. We today should deal with the faced challenges as swiftly and should learn the lessons of the past,” stated Sergiu Prodan.

On March 27, 1918, by 86 votes in favor, the People’s Council in Chisinau accepted the Union between Bessarabia and Romania.
