Conferences, book and fine art exhibitions, sport competitions, cultural programmes and other nationwide events are expected to be held on August 27, when Moldova is to celebrate its 16th anniversary of independence. Culture Minister Artur Cozma stated that these events will start on August 24 and will end on August 27 with the most important of them. The minister of culture proposed a various artistic programme with the participation of performers from Moldova and abroad. The holiday will end with fireworks in the National Assembly Square. The events devoted to the Day of the Republic will be held in all the district centres and country’s localities. In the morning, Moldovan officials headed by President Vladimir Voronin will lay flowers at the monument to Stephen the Great and at the Memorial of Heroes of the war on Nistru, which is the only activity with political character. The rest of the activities have an entertaining and cultural message. On August 27, 1991, the Moldovan Parliament adopted the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova, following a resolution of the National Assembly from the Chisinau Central Square, which attended by hundreds of thousands of people. After 16 years of independence, Moldova remains one Europe’s poorest countries, affected by internal conflicts and fragmented by a breakaway region.
