The Supreme Council of Magistracy (CSM) admitted on Tuesday, September 24, the withdrawal of the judge immunity of Ion Druță, chairman of the Supreme Court of Justice(CSJ), at the request of the interim prosecutor general. This decision came after, a day ago, Dumitru Robu instituted criminal proceedings on charges of illicit enrichment against the judge, IPN reports.
A press release of the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, mentions that as grounds for the criminal prosecution served the notification of the Information and Security Service, which evaluated the properties acquired by the members of the Druță family in the 2016-2019 period, given that an essential discrepancy was found between the properties and the declared income.
The searches in the judge's office were conducted in his absence, because he was on a trip abroad. Prosecutors have seized money coming from unknown sources, an office computer to verify relevant information, and documents necessary for the investigation.
According to the law, if the court finds him guilty of the offense, the CSJ judge risks a fine of up to 500 thousand lei or imprisonment for up to 15 years.
