The economic crisis leaves imprints on the mental health and more and more Moldovans appeal to the psychiatrist for help. According to psychiatrist Ghenadie Carsus, lecturer at the University of Medicine and Pharmaceutics of Moldova, the number of persons who suffer from depression or who attempted suicides has increased this year, Info-Prim Neo reports. ”Persons that tried to kill themselves by different methods are hospitalized every day. We also have a lot of confused, disorientated patients who suffer from insomnia and loss of appetite owing to the financial or work problems they face,” Ghenadie Caraus has told Info-Prim Neo. According to the specialist, in times of crisis the people are often anxious, discouraged and depressed. The persons that were fired or encounter problems in finding a job are most often in a disturbed state of mind. The low salary, the stress and the uncertainty created by the political situation in the country also cause depression, the psychiatrist said. The number of teens that try to commit suicide is also on the rise. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the suicide rate in Moldova is 15.7 per 100,000 people, being one of the highest among the CIS states. At the start of August, the World Health Organization warned that the present financial crisis has had a major impact on the mental health of the people and is considered the cause of thousands of cases of suicide and depression worldwide, especially the U.S. and Asia and other poor countries, where the effects of the crisis are as powerful, but the people there receive less assistance.
