The Ocnița Prosecutor’s Office took legal action over execution of low-quality building works on the block that collapsed in Otaci town on June 19. President Igor Dodon, who made a visit to the scene this morning, said the state will provide all the affected dwellers with new homes, IPN reports.

“According to preliminary findings, there are several causes for the collapse, including  the building of the bloc with different violations, permanent accumulation of water in the basement and unauthorized modifications in the structure – partial demolition of the basic walls by dwellers,” Igor Dodon posted on Facebook.

There were 36 apartments in the building and 51 persons of 18 families, 11 of whom were children, were evacuated. President Dodon said the local and central authorities’ key task is to temporarily lodge the evacuated persons and to identity new dwellings for them. A part of the victims stay with relatives, while others were accommodated at social institutions.

“The state will provide all the affected persons with permeant homes. In this regard, we are examining different possibilities, including the compensation of these for the destroyed apartments at market prices so that they could buy new apartments. We also consider it is necessary to carry out inspections at the multistory blocks of the same type in all Moldova’s localities. The emergencies divisions and the local authorities should deal with this as a matter of urgency,” said Igor Dodon.

A stair of a nine-story apartment building fully collapsed in the evening of June 19. Employees of the Police Inspectorate fenced the area to protect the people from harm.
