A Council on Sustainable Development will be set up under the Prime Minister to identify the priorities from the Post-2015 Development Agenda, called the Agenda 2030, and to ensure their implementation. The announcement was made by Foreign Minister Natalia Gherman and UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representatives for Moldova Dafina Gercheva in a news conference held to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, IPN reports.

According to the officials, during 23 years since Moldova joined the United Nations, the UN has helped to do reforms in Moldova in such areas as democratic governance, human rights, gender equality, development of sustainable energy and protection of the environment. Also, Moldova supported the UN in its efforts to ensure peace and stability, to promote disarmament and nonproliferation and to fight international terrorism by taking part in peacekeeping operations in Liberia, South Sudan, Sudan, Kosovo, and the Central African Republic.

“A long-term perspective of cooperation with the UN Country Team opens to us the Post-2015 Development Agenda that was recently adopted at the UN Summit in New York. This agenda provides a new view on global development, which can be achieved by reducing inequality, ensuring welfare for everyone and economic development by preserving the natural capital. We are to now set together the indicators for implementing this agenda in our country, by as concrete actions as possible,” said Natalia Gherman.

For her part, Dafina Gercheva stated that Moldova managed to significantly reduce the poverty rate and infant mortality. “It’s now time for the Government to identify the new objectives. The Government will not be alone on this path. The UN and I personally are waiting impatiently to unite our efforts with the Government, civil society and the private sector for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and for supporting Moldova on its path of becoming a modern and prosperous European country,” said Dafina Gercheva.
