Council of Europe will support probation and penitentiary strategies

The Council of Europe will support the probation and penitentiary strategies. This year’s priorities in the justice sector and possibilities of supporting the implementation of the documents adopted in the reform process were discussed in a meeting of Minister of Justice Vladimir Cebotari and Director of Human Rights in the Council of Europe’s Directorate General Human Rights and Rule of Law Christos Giakoumopoulos, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Ministry of Justice says the officials conferred on the situation of detainees in Moldova and the necessity of improving it through the angle of human rights. Vladimir Cebotari noted that the decriminalization of the legal system, resocialization of those in the criminal justice system and their reintegration after they are set free are among the Government’s priorities. The Ministry is making effort to put into practice the two strategies for the next four years, adopted in 2016, and to strengthen probation.

The Council of Europe official underlined the similarities for cooperation, expressing his readiness to

establish partnerships with the Republic of Moldova. Christos Giakoumopoulos stressed the necessity of respecting the logistics, equipment and security standards and of creating jobs for ex-detainees. He was furnished with updated information about the prosecution service, the judiciary and the ombudsperson’s work.
