The Tohatin mayor’s office received a garden shredder and organic waste containers, while the Probono Information and Resources Center got a paper shredder and an organic waste container in the framework of the project “Cost-Effective and Eco-Friendly Solutions for Correct Management of Organic Waste” that is implemented by the public association “Women in Sustainable Development of Moldova” (WiSDOM).

In a news conference at IPN, WiSDOM president Nadejda Andreev said the project is implemented together with the ECOTOX association as part of the Small Grants Program “Active Citizens for Environmental Protection” that is managed by AO EcoContact with the financial support of the Government of Sweden. A number of activities, including illustrative ones, like how to manage solid organic waste and how to chop this, are carried out within this project.

Besides seminars and workshops, the project includes the mounting of a photo exhibition and making of an instructional film about the management of organic waste. According to the implementers, these activities aim to raise the people’s awareness of the problem and the necessary solutions. “This is a very good instrument for helping the population realize the gravity and size of the problem of waste and possible solutions for managing waste, especially organic and plastic waste,” said Nadejda Andreev. The exhibition will be mobile and will be presented in a number of localities.

The president of WiSDOM also said that cleanup activities and activities to show who the waste can be used, like how to make coal from such organic waste as seeds, walnut shells, wood slivers or even bird feathers, will be held as part of the project.

In the same news conference, Nadejda Andreev spoke about the project “Cleaner River, Cleaner Seas” (CRoCuS) that was launched recently and is implemented together with ECOTOX. As part of this project, they will mobilize local volunteers so as to assess the most polluted places and to reduce waste on riverbanks. Another objective is to promote sustainable plastic and biodegradable waste management practices and to assess the potential for recycling waste.
