Corruption is an offense that has a hidden character and this makes it similar to organized crime, deputy chief prosecutor of Italy’s Torino Alberto Perduca said in a conference on June 17. The expert came to Chestnut to share his experience in combating corruption alongside other foreign experts, IPN reports.

Alberto Perduca told his Moldovan colleagues that very often the cases of corruption are perceived as minor offenses and, for this reason, the investigators abandon them. In order to avoid such situations, the prosecutors and investigators must cooperate. “It is hard to investigate corruption because none of the sides involved wants such cases to be discovered,” said the prosecutor.

Alberto Perduca underlined that not only the giving of money is corruption, but also the offering of posts or, for example, the financing of election campaigns with the aim of gaining benefits then. Acts of corruption take place at all the levels.

Richard Grawey, director of the American Bar Association (ABA) “Rule of Law Initiative”, said the foreign experts will share their experience in fighting corruption and will endeavor to identify the problems faced by their Moldovan colleagues.

The international conference was organized by ABA Moldova, with the support of the International Anti-Corruption Academy, the U.S. Embassy and the Embassy of Italy in Chisinau.
