The correctness of the elections in Moldova was affected by the moral hoax aimed at persuading the people that a threat coming from the European West endangers Moldova’s statehood, said Adrian Severin, vice president on foreign policy and defense of the Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The early elections held in Moldova on July 29 were reasonably free and relatively fair from technical viewpoint. From political point of view yet, the freedom of these elections was limited by the absence of a space for public debates and by the constraints imposed on the freedom of getting informed,” the MEP says in a statement.
Adrian Severin said that time will show whether the July 29 elections were or not a trump card in promoting Moldovan people’s legitimate aspirations to strengthen the national statehood and coherence of the state, for economic welfare and social justice, for real democracy and European integration.
The MEP stresses that the voters should understand that democracy does not mean dictatorship of the majority and that Moldova can now have a consensual government backed by a broad Democratic coalition. “We recommend those that lost the elections to protect the interests of their supporters by negotiating a vital public agenda that would be supported by the Parliament and promoted by the future government in a climate of stability and political cooperation,” Severin said.
“We call on the Moldovan politicians to avoid the export and internationalization of Moldova’s internal problems and concentrate on the facilitation of cooperation relations with the neighbors or the major players from the East and the West. We ask the European Union to support Moldova’s course towards prosperity, freedom, security, democracy and European integration with larger resources.”
The European Socialists and Democrats consider that the Moldovan democratic left wing parties should join forces with the Democratic Party and encourage all those that have convictions or aspirations characteristic of the modern European Democratic left to do the same.
