In the process of reforming the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO), there will be taken new measures to combat corruption, while some of the programs will be updated, Prosecutor General Corneliu Gurin said in the program “Politics” produced by TV7 channel, IPN reports.

According to Gurin, they already work on a number of new measures that are to be implemented. The strategic development program is not overdue. The main goal is to update the program.  “I think there should be a PGO’s program not a prosecutor’s program. We may propose legislative amendments. They are being drafted and no hurry is recommended. What is happening to the law enforcement bodies affects both the institution’s employees and those involved in criminal cases,” said the prosecutor general.

Corneliu Gurin also said that zero tolerance of corruption sounds nice, but this is the basic principle of the reform aimed at bringing things at the PGO in order. “A judge was caught in the act of taking bribe last week. Those who enter the law enforcement system do not come after salaries. But this does not mean that the salaries and guarantees for the employees of the law enforcement bodies shouldn’t be increased. They should be raised but not as a preliminary thing, but as a consequence of something,” stated the prosecutor general.

He also said that when the employees of the law enforcement bodies lose not only the post, but also the guarantees for acts of corruption, there will be results. He specified that this provision forms part of the anticorruption document that is accepted at political and governmental levels. Another aspect concerns the legislation on the integrity of judges, which should be implemented very quickly and intensely. The prosecutor general didn’t want to say what the corrupt prosecutors face, but underlined that the worked out mechanisms cannot be made public.

Corneliu Gurin said he was glad that the members of the Pro-European Coalition didn’t negotiate the post of prosecutor general. He stressed that he has confidence in the people and politicians who said that they want changes in the PGO to take place and that he discussed with Nicolae Timofti and Iurie Leanca, who promised they will support him in the implementation of the reform.
