The behavior of the government of the Republic of Moldova in the context of the adoption of the PACE resolution by which the Transnistrian region is recognized as “a zone of Russian occupation” is well-through-out, considers political analyst Cornel Ciurea. “From my viewpoint, this prudent approach of the Government should be welcomed and supported, primarily because this is manifested in conditions of pressure. We know that pressure is being exerted on our government to behave in a different way, to renounce this neutrality, to name things. I do not agree with this,” the pundit stated in IPN’s public debate “PACE recognized Transnistria as “zone of Russian occupation”. What new opportunities or risks can this generate for the reintegration of the Republic of Moldova?
The expert noted he supports the Party of Socialists’ position about the eventual consequences of the resolution for Moldova. “It is very good that the Party of Socialists warns the population, the government about the danger of the escalation of the conflict and about the fact that this war in our neighborhood can expand to our country. As long as the government follows this line of conduct and behaves widely, I think the dangers of escalation are minimal,” stated Cornel Ciurea.
In particular, the pundit noted the position of the minister of foreign affairs whom he called “savior” in this situation.
At the same time, Cornel Ciurea said he does not agree with the opinion of another participant in the debate, ex-Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Alexandru Flenchea, according to whom, the tactic not to irritate Russia no longer produces results. Ciurea said this tactic already produces results by the confirmation of the fact that we are a neutral state.
As to the attitude to the PACE resolution, he noted that it is for the first time that civil society will have to accept a decision that will be taken by the political class.
“The fear of war is typical not only of our ruling politician. It affected all the people and the people realize that it is the exclusive responsibility of the politicians to take a decision concerning Transnistria,” stated the political scientist.
The public debate titled “PACE recognized Transnistria as “zone of Russian occupation”. What new opportunities or risks can this generate for the reintegration of the Republic of Moldova?” was the 230th installment of IPN’s project “Developing Political Culture through Public Debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
