Cornel Ciurea: Polls are not reliable conveyor of people’s message

“The polls are not a reliable conveyor. The citizens speak their own language. We are trying to understand what they say when we analyze polls, but these also lie,” political commentator Cornel Ciurea stated in IPN’s public debate “Stakes of presidential elections in view of political class and society”.

According to him, the citizens have the right give orders to politicians. “We are looking for parties’ receptivity to people’s instructions. From this viewpoint, not civil society, but the Shor Party is the most receptive political party. There is perfect receptivity. Those who receive will vote for it. Igor Dodon also tries to be receptive to people’s wishes, when he speaks about the double indexation of pensions, social assistance. But these messages already contain a rather big element of abstraction. The parties of the right are most far from receptivity, especially Maia Sandu, who speaks about the fight against corruption, justice sector reform, but these things are far from the immediate needs of the people. They could really be strategic points, but I speak about receptivity,” stated the expert in political sciences, noting the people in polls will no say that the fight against corruption or justice sector reform are among their needs.

As to candidates’ geopolitical stake in elections, Cornel Ciurea said Igor Dodon will partially reveal his stake in his speeches. “The socioeconomic projects are somehow connected to the geopolitical course because the problem of the Russian loan and assistance shows to the population that the future will depend on a better relationship with Russia, including the economic success,” he stated.

The expert also said that Maia Sandu does not need to clearly formulate her geopolitical objective, the entry into the EU, as this derives from what she says. The strategic objective formulated by the right and those who support her is to create a pro-European parliamentary majority of the right, associated with a President of the right.

According to Cornel Ciurea, Andrei Năstase is a politician who is testing a middle variant, between Maia Sandu and Igor Dodon. “On the one hand, he tries to keep that European flair, but realizes that he cannot copy Maia Sandu’s message and thus undertakes a part of Dodon’s socioeconomic, cultural, religious themes.”

Renato Usatyi is a kind of political clown. “He does not have any message. He says he will bring a very good team of specialists who will formulate an economic modernization message. In his case, not the message, but the way in which he breaks the rules of the game and mixes the pieces on the chessboard matters,” stated Cornel Ciurea.

He added that Tudor Deliu and Violeta Ivanov do not have a big stake and bank on imagine transfer. They yet have a local stake that is very important for their parties, for paving the way for the return of Filat and Shor.

Cornel Ciurea noted there are no independent candidates for President as, unlike such candidates, the parties are organized units that can collect the necessary number of signatures. The people’s weakness is also seen in the lack of organizational capacity.

The public debate “Stakes of presidential elections in view of political class and society” was the 154th installment of the series “Developing political culture through public debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
