Corman: European integration and development of cooperation with traditional eastern partners are vital for Moldova

Head of Parliament Igor Corman pleads for Moldova’s integration into the European Union and for the development of cooperation with the traditional eastern partners at bilateral level and within the CIS. He discussed the subjects in meetings with the Chairman of the Russian State Duma Sergey Naryshkin and Speaker of the Federation Council of the Russian Federal Assembly Valentina Matviyenko, who heads the Council of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, on April 17 in St Petersburg, IPN has learned from the Government’s press service.

Discussing the crisis in the region with the two officials, Igor Corman pleaded for the stabilization of the situation, avoidance of confrontations and prevention of separatism extension. He also referred to the developments in the Transnistrian conflict settlement process, given the recent appeal to Russia of the so-called supreme soviet of Tiraspol to recognize the independence of Transnistria and to accept its entry into the Russian Federation.

Sergey Naryshkin confirmed Russia’s position that the dispute must be resolved by respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova. 

As regards the bilateral cooperation, the Moldovan Speaker underlined the importance of examining the economic and commercial subjects from the agenda of the intergovernmental economic cooperation commission between Moldova and Russia, and of solving the problem of Moldovan wine exports to Russia. He said the Moldovan authorities are ready to hold consultations on the text of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between Moldova and the EU, which will be signed in the near future.

Also yesterday, Igor Corman had a meeting with Anatoly Rubinov, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus.

The Speaker, accompanied by a delegation that consists of MPs Chiril Lucinschi, Violeta Ivanov and Petru Vlah, is taking part in the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly that is held in St Petersburg on April 17-18.
