The Socialists’ proposal to introduce the mixed-member electoral system is a copy of the Democrats’ bill concerning the uninominal voting system and the European Union will harshly penalize the Republic of Moldova, civic activist Valeriu Pasa, expert of the organization “WatcDog.MD”, said in the program “Expertise hour” on Jurnal TV channel, IPN reports. On the other hand, analyst Visarion Cheshuev said the EU is not an indicator for the Republic of Moldova.
“The European Union will impose harsh conditions on the Republic of Moldova. The Venice Commission allowed a lot of room for an honorable way out of this situation concerning the mixed electoral system. The Commission’s experts referred strictly to the shortcomings of the draft law, but didn’t refer to the political context,” said Valeriu Pasa.
The expert considers the mixed-member electoral system was actually the idea of the Democratic leader. “The bill to introduce the mixed electoral system is in fact what Vladimir Plahotniuc wanted and Dodon helped him,” he stated.
Visarion Cheshuev said the EU’s stance should not bother us. “I think we exaggerate the weight of the European Union, the fact that the EU principles should be a benchmark for us. This is not so. The Republic of Moldova has very good maneuvering space. Not all the EU member states are organized based on the standards and principles worked out in Brussels,” stated the adviser to the President.
He expressed his optimism about the chances of reaching a consensus with the EU on the mixed-member system. “The EU will understand the internal policy of the Republic of Moldova, but our politicians should also show common sense and respect the democratic norms and interests of the citizens,” stated the adviser.
