Two men are under criminal investigation on suspicion of illegally selling cigarettes in the capital. During searches, law enforcement officers discovered a tobacco product haul worth 1.5 million lei, allegedly smuggled into the country, IPN reports.
According to the General Police Inspectorate, the criminal case related to the creation or leadership of a criminal organization was initiated in 2023. It was found that the two men, aged between 35 and 40, along with other individuals, were illegally trading cigarettes. These products were intended both for the domestic market and the black market in other countries.
As a result of the operations, police officers discovered and seized several boxes of unfiltered cigarettes of various brands, both with and without excise stamps, stored in a trailer on Calea Basarabiei Street in the capital.
In total, 72 boxes containing 750 packs of cigarettes each were confiscated - equivalent to 1,080,000 cigarettes - amounting to approximately 1,500,000 lei.
The criminal investigation is ongoing, and the suspects are being investigated while at liberty as authorities work to determine each individual’s role in the case.
