People in Chisinau whose pipes froze will be provided with water by means of tank trucks, assured Constantin Becciev, the director of the city's water utility ACC. Becciev told the ordinary City Hall's meeting on Monday that despite warmer weather pipes remained frozen at over 2,000 addresses across the city. The utility's repair teams have intensified their work to thaw frozen pipes and replace those that failed in the recent cold snap, but this is going to take a while – says Becciev – and in the meantime the affected residents will be provided with water transported in tanks. However, Becciev explained that the utility had only five large-capacity tanks and each district will be entitled to only one such tank, which will be located near the district head's offices. Constantin Becciev further explained the large number of affected addresses on the fact that such extreme temperatures occur only once in 30 or 40 years. Becciev went on to add that “millions of lei” were needed to replace the fatigued pipes across the municipality. “Each year the utility spends large amounts of money for current repairs and maintenance, but this is not enough. We have already asked the municipality for help to deal with the extensive weariness of the pipes in order to avoid such incidents in the future”. A list of affected addresses was placed on the ACC's site.
