Representatives of the European Union will check how the consular sections of the Embassies of Romania in Chisinau and Istanbul observe the conditions for granting entry Schengen visas. The inspection will be carried out in the context of Romania’s plans to join the Schengen area until 2011, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the Romanian publication “Adevarul” (“Truth”). Daniel Gosa, official of the Romanian Foreign Ministry, explained that after Romania joins the Schengen area, its present borders with the area will be eliminated. Therefore, the external borders must be secured. The consulate is regarded as an ‘outpost’ of the border as the people apply for visas there. “After the joining ceremony scheduled for March 2011, Romanian will no longer grant national visas valid only on our territory, but Schengen visas valid for the whole Schengen area that includes 25 European states,” the official said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. The Embassy in Chisinau is one of the top five Romanian Embassies that issue the largest number of visas, alongside the Embassies in Belgrade, Istanbul, Kiev and Moscow.
