Constitutional Court endorses initiative to amend Constitution

The Constitutional Court on July 24 approved the initiative to review Article 78 of the Constitution, concerning the election of the President. The initiative was signed by 46 MPs of the Liberal Democratic Party, the Democratic Party and the Liberal Party, IPN reports.

The lawmakers suggest modifying the method of election the President of Moldova, as regards the number of votes needed. Thus, under the bill to amend Article 78, paragraph (3) of the Constitution, the head of state is elected by a majority of votes of MP. Currently, the head of state is elected by the votes of at least 3/5 of the MPs.

The bill to amend the Constitution can be adopted after at least six months of its presentation, by 61 votes of MP.
