Constitutional Court allows head of state to dissolve Parliament

The Constitutional Court today examined the application filed by the outgoing President of Moldova on June 10 and ruled that there are preconditions for dissolving the 17th Parliament, Info-Prim Neo reports. The judges ascertained that the two rounds of voting for electing the head of state, on May 28 and June 3, were boycotted by the 41 Opposition MPs. “The decision cannot be appealed and will take effect after published in the Official Gazette,” the judge-rapporteur of the Constitutional Court Elena Safaleru said. At the start of the meeting, Vasile Balan, vice president of Moldova Noastra Alliance, asked the judges to suspend the examination of the application as the decrees signed by the current head of state Vladimir Voronin are unconstitutional. He argued that the posts of President and Speaker are incompatible. The MP’s request was rejected by the judges. Immediately after the dissolution of the Parliament, the outgoing President must set the election date. “I think that no time will be wasted and the date of the elections will be announced by June 16 at the latest,” said Dumitru Pulbere, president of the Constitutional Court.
